Unjunked Recipes: (Episode 1) Chocolate Avocado Mousse

Welcome to the very first post in our Unjunked Recipes series, a collection of real-food favorites reimagined without the junk. Each recipe is simple, family-friendly, and designed to show you how small swaps can turn comfort food into nourishment.

And we’re kicking things off with dessert. 🎉

When you think of chocolate mousse, “healthy” probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind. Traditionally, this creamy dessert is loaded with heavy cream, refined sugar, and sometimes even processed pudding mixes. Delicious? Yes. Nourishing? Not so much.

That’s why I love this unjunked twist on a classic favorite: Chocolate Avocado Mousse.
It’s silky, decadent, and rich, but made with just a handful of real, whole-food ingredients.

And yes, even the kids will love it (they’ll never guess the base is avocado!).

Why This Recipe Works

  • Avocados create the rich, creamy texture you’d expect from mousse, but with healthy fats that keep you satisfied.

  • Honey gives natural sweetness without the refined sugar crash.

  • Cocoa powder delivers deep chocolate flavor and antioxidants.

  • Almond milk & vanilla balance everything out for that perfect, dessert-worthy taste.

This dessert isn’t just “better for you”, it’s a treat you can feel good about serving your family.

The Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe avocados

  • 4 Tbsp almond milk

  • 4 Tbsp honey (or maple syrup if you prefer)

  • 3 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  • Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor.

  • Blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides if needed.

  • Spoon into serving bowls or jars.

  • Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

  • Optional: Garnish with fresh fruit, coconut flakes, or mint leaves.

Serving Ideas

  • Top with fresh berries for a burst of color and flavor 🍓

  • Sprinkle with chopped nuts for crunch 🥜

  • Add a dollop of coconut whipped cream for extra indulgence 🥥
