There’s something about September that feels like a fresh start. New routines, cooler evenings, and of course, the arrival of apple season! Whether you’re walking through a local orchard, stocking up at the farmers’ market, or just filling your cart at the grocery store, apples are everywhere this time of year.
And that’s a good thing, because apples are one of the easiest, most versatile, and family-friendly ingredients you can bring into your kitchen. They’re packed with fiber, vitamin C, and natural sweetness, making them perfect for snacks, desserts, or even main meals.
Instead of grabbing the usual bag of chips or sugary granola bars, let’s celebrate September by making apples the star of the show. Here are a few of my favorite ways to use them:
The smell of these muffins baking is basically fall in a pan. Warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg mixed with sweet, diced apples make them perfect for a cozy breakfast or lunchbox treat. Bonus, they’re naturally sweetened with maple syrup instead of refined sugar.
If you haven’t tried apples in a sandwich, this one will change your mind. Think melty brie, tangy fig jam, and crisp apple slices tucked inside golden grilled bread. It’s a quick lunch that feels gourmet but comes together in minutes.
Apples aren’t just for sweets, they shine in savory dishes too. This hearty skillet hash mixes sausage, squash, kale, and diced apples for a nutrient-packed meal that’s perfect for busy weeknights. It’s fall comfort food done right.
For an after-school snack, skip the packaged granola bars and make apple nachos instead! Just slice up an apple, drizzle with sunflower seed butter, and sprinkle on granola. Kids love them, and they take less than 5 minutes to make.
These are just a taste (literally!) of what you can do with apples this month. I’ve put together a 20-recipe Unjunked Apple Guide that includes everything from muffins and crisps to salads and even a slow-cooker pork tenderloin with apples.

So this September, let’s make apples more than just a back-to-school fruit, let’s make them a reason to gather, cook, and enjoy simple, unjunked meals together.
